Highway Barriers

April 28, 2008

WISN 12’s Joyce Garbaciak has been working the past weeks on investigating the cable barriers that are between the lanes on major roadways.

Listen Now: Joyce Garbaciak talks about her investigation into cable barriers

Where traffic is the thickest, there are concrete barriers to prevent an accident on one side from spreading to the other. Where there is less traffic, there are cable barriers, and where there is even less traffic, there are no barriers.

In one recent fatal accident, the barrier didn’t do as it was meant to.

When Bob Tolzman saw the accident report, where his daughter Katie suffered fatal injuries, he was concerned.

Hear about how Bob is turning that concern into action and hear about Katie’s last days on WISN-TV Channel 12 at 10 p.m. Tuesday.

At 10 p.m. Wednesday, Joyce Garbaciak takes a harder look at these barriers that are installed in areas throughout Wisconsin, including:

Ozaukee County, along I-43 from State 167 to State 32

Milwaukee and Ozaukee Counties, along I-43 from Good Hope Road to State 167

Washington County, along U.S. 41, from County Q to State 145

With TV, we tend to make a connection with the people on the screen. We are, after-all, inviting them into our homes.

Behind the talented people we see delivering the news, are other talented people making the whole process work.

Lori Waldon, news director at WISN, leads the charge and shapes what it is that 12 News delivers every day.

Jane Hampden of WUWM interviewed Lori on her show Lake Effect.

Transitions happen. It is how a society or a culture or a religion makes its way through the years.

Traditions are kept, other traditions are created and others are left behind. The Catholic Church transitioned with Vatican II. There were sweeping changes to the how and the what and the why the faithful do what they do.

Confessions went through that transition as well. WISN 12 News’ Joyce Garbaciak takes a look at that transition as people tend to do more of an internal reconciliation rather than going to chat with a priest.

Listen to Joyce Garbaciak talk about Catholic Confessions here

On the heels of Pope Benedict’s visit to the U.S., the Catholic Church is looking to new leadership to guide them through constant states of transition.

Joyce talks to church leaders on what trends they are seeing and what seems to be a decline in confessions. Look for her story Sunday at 10 p.m. on WISN-TV Channel 12.

TV and the sports world

April 25, 2008

When you work in sports, it’s a small world. When you are involved in the Milwaukee sports scene, it is even smaller. All the professionals covering sports know each other.

Because Dan Needles grew up here, then came back to cover sports here, he has some deep connections.

OnMilwaukee.com dug into those connections in a little Q & A with WISN 12’s sports anchor:

ATM Safety

April 23, 2008

In early March, WISN covered a story on the Marquette University campus of two students that were abducted.

According to the report, two men drove them around to several ATMs attempting to get cash.

WISN 12 News’ Colleen Henry started looking at other cases involving people withdrawing money from the Automated Teller Machine while under duress.

Listen Now: Colleen Henry Talks About ATM Safety

ATMs have been around for more than 30 years, and safety has always been an issue. Colleen found that there is a method invented to alert authorities when someone is withdrawing money when they don’t want to.

Colleen looks into that method and questions why it isn’t being used.

Look for her story Thursday night at 10 p.m. on WISN-TV, Channel 12.

March 3, 2008: Marquette Students Abducted; One Suspect in Custody

After the results are tabulated on Tuesday, the Democrats should have a better take on who will be the party’s candidate for president … maybe.

There’s plenty of speculation to who the winner will be. But if Hillary Clinton’s margin of victory is in the single digits of percentages, Barack Obama may still be the winner at the convention.

WISN-TV Channel 12 will cover the primary on Tuesday night at 10 p.m. with Mike Gousha and Jeff Mayers of WisPolitics.com on hand to offer analysis.

Have a need to wear a kilt and not sure which tartan to use.

Well you are in luck now:

Gov. Doyle Signs Bill, Wisconsin Gets Tartan

Yep, show your love for Wisconsin people. I’m all for kilts, I think they are wonderful. Really, I do.

But why Wisconsin would need its own tartan, and use tax dollars to get the legislation, I will never know.
